This MLA citation generator builds Works Cited entries in MLA 9th edition, the style used across literature, languages and most humanities courses. Paste a DOI, ISBN, URL or title and the generator formats the record it retrieves. MLA 9 is built on nine core elements rather than a fixed template per source type, which is flexible in principle and easy to get wrong in practice.
Real Modern Language Association (MLA) 9th edition references, formatted the way literature and the humanities coursework expects them.

MLA uses an author-page system. The in-text citation carries the author surname and the page number with no comma and no abbreviation such as p. If the source has no page numbers, as with most web pages, give the author alone. The list at the end is titled Works Cited and is alphabetised by the first element of each entry.

Citing a website in MLA follows the same core elements. Give the author, the page title in quotation marks, the site name in italics as the container, the publication date, and the location as a URL. MLA 9 asks you to drop the http:// or https:// prefix from the URL, and an access date is optional but useful for pages without a date.

MLA is the style of the Modern Language Association and is standard across literature, languages, cultural studies, film studies and composition courses. In North American schools and universities it is often the first style students are taught, which is why it turns up in humanities coursework far beyond literature departments. The ninth edition, current since 2021, kept the nine core elements introduced in the eighth and added guidance on inclusive language and annotated bibliographies.
MLA calls the list Works Cited rather than References or Bibliography, and the distinction is meaningful: it contains only what you actually cited.
Both are humanities styles, and students often move between them when they take a literature module alongside a history one.

Yes. MLA 9 has been current since 2021 and kept the nine core elements introduced in MLA 8, with expanded guidance on inclusive language and annotated bibliographies.
Author, title of source, title of container, other contributors, version, number, publisher, publication date and location. Every entry is assembled from those nine in that order, which is why MLA has no separate template per source type.
With no author, start the entry with the title and use a shortened title in the in-text citation. With no page numbers, give the author alone in text. Do not invent paragraph numbers unless the source itself numbers them.
Treat the platform as the container: the uploader is the author, the video or post title goes in quotation marks, YouTube or the platform name is the container in italics, then the upload date and the URL without its protocol.
A container is the larger work that holds your source: the journal holding an article, the anthology holding a story, the streaming service holding an episode. MLA 9 lets a source sit inside two containers, so a journal article found in a database lists the journal first and the database second. This is what replaced the separate templates older editions used.
MLA treats it as a source with no author: start with the prompt in quotation marks as the title, then the tool as the container, the version, the company, the date, and the URL. Your instructor may also require the full exchange in an appendix, since a reader cannot retrieve the conversation.
The format changes with the kind of source. These walk through the cases students hit most.
